CANNES, FRANCE

One of the beaches. It was only 60 degrees, so no beautiful people on the beach. Lots and lots of hotels, tho. One of the shopping streets. Here is where the people are. Some of the shops were not very expensive. I didn't expect that.
There are 2 islands right off the coast. On the larger one is this monastary. We could have taken a boat out there, but chose not to. Enough boats for a day, we instead took a bus.
In the one church we went into in Cannes, we saw this pieta, not by Michaelangelo. You can see the differences. Note, if you can, that this Madonna also is very young. Michaelangelo's Madonna is also very young.
This is the sculpture by Picasso of "Man with sheep" outside the Museum where his "War and Peace" painting is. This is a lot more recognizable as what it is than the painting is. As you can tell we are not Picasso fans. The bus ride was nice, tho.

April 12

Our third consecutive port. We are not used to this. We usually have at least one sea day between ports. We even have one more port coming up without a sea day, but at least we don't arrive until nine. So, finally, a chance to get some sleep. Port days usually require getting up between 5:30 and 6:30. Way too early for Arleen.

Today we walked around Cannes. We didn't see any beautiful people, just lots of people and beautiful boats. We saw a crafts/yard sale in the town square. We took a bus to Vallauris, a town on the other side of the mountains from Cannes. There is an old deconsecrated church there that Picasso painted a mural for. It is his statement for peace, during the Korean war. I'm sorry, but I don't like Picasso. We walked round that town and then took the bus back. There were lovely views going over the mountain and very expensive homes that you couldn't see because they had walls around them.

We, ok Arleen, had to see a casino. We didn't go all the way to Monte Carlo, but did find some casinos in Cannes. Arleen helped the local economy with the slot machines, while Duane watched. Since the machines did not want to cooperate we left. I little lighter in the pocket.

We were suprised that the shops on a small street were not very expensive. I'm sure other's are.

Then back to the ship

Hi there world travelers. Seeing all of the ports and cities is great. It's having a private tour guide. Happy Easter (a little late) and Happy Passover (a little early). Our house is still a work in progress -- no toilet, running water, and such, BUT the walls are painted, the wood floor is refinished and the new windows are all in place. Stephen will be taking finals in a week or so and then home for the summer. So far he's doing well. I had minor surgery and am fine and Mike is himself accept a few pounds lighter (which is good). We have missed being able to talk with you both on a regular basis. Altho I realize that your trip is almost over and that you guys are sad, we will be glad to hear your voices again. Continue to send pictures and having fun. Love you both....Mike, Barbara and Stephen Friedman

I continue to love your blog and pictures and am very jealous of all the great sites. Love the castles! I know your cruise is almost over - but are you staying in Europe for awhile? When are you coming back to the States?

Love ya, Debbie
